A History of the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation
While the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation is a new name in the Greater Peterborough Area, the people and the purpose behind the Foundation have a long history of distinguished service to the community in which it operates.
Opening its doors in 1985 as the St. Joseph's General Hospital Foundation, raising funds and providing capital for expansion, medical equipment and educational opportunities for Hospital staff was the norm. St. Joseph's Hospital went through many changes over the years and the Foundation remained in step, changing its name and its focus of fundraising in response.
When the St. Joseph's Health Centre closed, the Foundation found that its focus was no longer dictated by the needs of the Hospital that it had served. Looking to the community, the Foundation recognized an opportunity to develop support for healthy aging initiatives for the region’s seniors. Working with the Friends of Fleming Foundation, Marycrest Home for the Aged, Anson House and Sir Sandford Fleming College on the St. Joseph’s at Fleming Capital Campaign, the coalition successfully raised approximately $7.1 million in capital funds needed to build the state-of-the-art St. Joseph’s at Fleming long-term care facility.
Building on the success and completion of this astounding venture, the Foundation embraced 2005 as a year of change; the Foundation officially announced its exciting new vision for community partnerships not focused solely on seniors, but on life-long healthy aging for all. While supporting St. Joseph’s at Fleming remained an objective, the Foundation committed to a larger focus within the community, building partnerships that enriched the lives of all our region’s citizens.
2009 held yet another definitive change for the Foundation. With the overwhelming success of its initiatives and community partnerships, St. Joseph’s Care Foundation became the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation on the 27th of May. The Foundation formed a partnership with Primary Health Care Services of Peterborough in support of community-based health care services.
