Your Dollars at Work
With your generous support, the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation funds needed equipment, education, research and innovative programs.
Your donations ensure that your Family Health Teams have ALL of the best tools to diagnose and treat you and your family, including life-changing, community-based disease prevention programs. Your donation is a life changing investment in your health - and your better living.
Canadian governments do not fund all the health care services and equipment our community requires. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care funds only operations and staffing for the 5 Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams.
Look at some of the ways your gifts have improved community health care services in Greater Peterborough:
Ophthalmology Equipment
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) equipment purchased for Peterborough eye specialists, as part of the Foundation's ophthalmology endowment.
In the same way that ultrasound and CT scanning allows other branches of medicine to see detail inside internal organs, OCT imaging allows for minute assessment of detailed structures inside the eyeball.
OCT technology is completely non-invasive, the patient sits comfortably while the machine maps the eye to provide essential data relevant to the delivery of patient care and allows local ophthalmologists to perform procedures in their offices that previously required patients to travel out of town or be conducted in a hospital setting.

17 Automated External Defibrillators
17 AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) were funded by the Foundation for all Family Health Team sites across Peterborough City and County.
AEDs save lives. 40,000 Canadians experience cardiac arrest every year. That's one cardiac arrest every 12 minutes. AEDs make it possible for even non-medical personnel to restore heart rhythm and life.

40 Pulse Oximeters
40 pulse oximeters to the Peterborough Networked Family Health Teams and specialists, thanks in part to the invaluable funding received from the Peterborough Festival of Trees.
Oximeters provide continual quick and accurate assessments of one's lung function. These powerful devices were essential in the treatment of Influenza-Like illness during the H1N1 pandemic.

ECG
A new diagnostic tool was provided to the Buckhorn Regional Health Centre thanks to the Greater Peterborough Health Services Foundation.
An electrocardiogram, or ECG for short, is the most commonly performed cardiac test. It is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart. In an ECG test, the electrical impulses made while the heart is beating are recorded and usually shown on a piece of paper. Any problems with the heart's rhythm or pace will be recorded.
The information obtained from an ECG test can be used to discover different types of heart disease, and for seeing how well a patient is responding to treatment.
