“Concussion education and awareness is something that our Foundation has funded for a very long time” said Executive Director Vince Bierworth. “Over the past few years, we have been able to provide funding to two very important initiatives; PACA (Peterborough Athletics Concussion Awareness) and the H.O.P.E Bursary in Honour of Steve Montador. The support the volleyball community in the Peterborough area offered for our first indoor tournament in February was so amazing. They sold out the event in a week, which is why we decided to do a beach event. This recreational coed tournament will be a fun day that helps us continue supporting these important concussion programs.”
Sponsorship opportunities are also available. If you would like to sponsor or find out more about the event, please email Vince@GPHSF.ca or phone 705 740 8074 ext.101.
About PACA
In collaboration with the Peterborough Family Health Team, PACA’s (Peterborough Athletics Concussion Awareness) goal is to increase the awareness of concussions in the Peterborough area, while setting a standard for other communities. PACA’s four pillars of concussion management are Recognize, Remove, Manage, Prevent. Educational resources, including the Sports Values Program, can be found at www.PACA.Health.
About H.O.P.E Bursary in Honour of Steve Montador
The H.O.P.E. (Helping Others Participate Equally) Bursary in honour of Steve Montador was established to support students transitioning from high school to college/university that are suffering the long-term effects of a sports-related concussion and require a reduced academic course load as result of injury. Steve was an NHL defenseman, Peterborough Pete, and a H.O.P.E. board member and supporter. Steve suffered concussions playing hockey, with his last occurring while playing in the NHL for Chicago, effectively ending his career. He was very vocal about his struggles and depression following his concussion and vowed to be a voice and advocate. After suddenly passing away at the age of 35 at his home in Mississauga, his friends and fellow board members in H.O.P.E. established this bursary to support student athletes who are suffering the long-term effects of concussion related injury while trying to transition to College or University. Steve Montador’s story is also the subject of the 2017 book by Ken Dryden titled “Game Change: The life and death of Steve Montador and the future of hockey.” More on the Bursary can be found at https://www.gphsf.ca/stevemontador/
